20 September
After having not slept well for several
weeks due to allergies and other reasons, last night I finally managed to sleep
over 12 hours, with only a few interruptions to get up and use to toilet or
drink water. I had a lot of strange dreams, but I can only remember this
fragment from the last one, when my alarm went off.
Boy 1/ Protagonist (swinging back and forth on a karate fitness machine, his head turning
anxiously towards the older, bigger boy peering at him menacingly from the door,
his small penis exposed beneath his towel): My finger did not come off that
way!
Flashback
to their first encounter: he was right – although the bully had tried to cut
off his finger, the protagonist had saved himself by grabbing the bully’s finger
and sliding it down the blunt edge of the knife, causing it to bleed; he had
then managed run away from the bully; the bully sent the police after the
protagonist, but the latter managed to avoid being caught; he then vowed to
kill the bully, so he took a job at this karate studio, hoping to be able to
train in his spare time and become capable of defeating the bully in
hand-to-hand combat. The reason he was missing one finger was that he had lost
it earlier, when he had worked at his father’s butcher shop.
Boy 2/ Bully: Yes it did.
Narrator: Killing Johnson was the hook for
something that happened.
Alarm
goes off
Is there really something as generalizable as a phallogocentric type of unconscious? If so, does it really revolve around themes such as fear of castration, patricide, etc., that can so easily be fit into the Freudian frame of analysis? Or do we just have such dreams because we've read Freud and his followers? (Or is it just me who has these dreams?)
